Reading Comprehension

A. Answer the following questions:
1. What suggestion does President Kalam give to children for remembering formulas of science?
Answer – For remembering the formulas of science, President Kalam suggests the children that by constant application one can remember them.

2. Describe Kalam's happiest day.
Answer – Once, Kalam was working with doctors to get light weight FROs for polio affected persons. When they were fitted the children started running, walking and pedalling cycles. Their mobility brought tears of joy in the eyes of their parents. That was Kalam’s happiest day.

3. Why does the President remember his class teacher so much?
Answer – President remembers his class teacher so much because he taught them by showing real life examples like how birds fly at the seashore of Rameswaram. His way of teaching encouraged him to take up the study of science and thus he became a scientist.

4. What is ‘courage’ according to Dr. Kalam?
Answer – According to Dr. Kamam, “Saving others from disaster without minding about your own safety is courage.”

5. Which point do you like the most in the 10 point oath? Why?
Answer – I liked the seventh point - “I will be honest and endeavour to make a corruption free society”. I like this the most because if it would happen the country would develop at rapid speed and all its people would live in peace and happiness.

B. Make sentences using the proverbs given to you in exercise A:
Example: Shyam falls sick frequently. After taking him to the
doctor, his mother encouraged him to have an apple by using the
proverb, “An apple a day, keeps the doctor away”.

Sentence – The farmer always worked hard and saved money. Now he is a rich man. This proves that tiny drops make a mighty ocean.

Sentence – The students should prepare for the examination throughout the year. As they say a stitch in time saves nine, else they will not succeed.

Sentence – The half-wit persons always interfere because an empty vessel makes more noise.

The pen is mightier than the sword –
Sentence – The journalist’s articles have exposed the minister’s illegal activities. It is true that the pen is mightier than the sword.

Failure is the stepping stone to success –
Sentence – Ravi has failed in the competition. He worked harder with dedication and won gold medal next year. Its true for some failure is the stepping stone to success.

Barking dogs do not bite –
Sentence – Those who threaten you so much, hardly do any real harm. As the saying goes - barking does do not bite.

Honesty is the best policy –
Sentence – Ramesh has won the highest position in his office as a reward for his honesty. Really honesty is the best policy.

A friend in need is a friend indeed
Sentence – In Ravi’s worst time, only Raj stood by him. It is truly said that a friend in need is a friend indeed.
