Comprehension

1. What was the task given to Suman by her dadi?

Answer –  Suman was given the task to bring some important herbs from the backyard by her dadi.

 

2. Why did dadi need the herbs?

Answer –  Dadi needed the herbs to prepare some medicine from them.

 

3. List the various systems of medicines prevalent in the world.

Answer –  Allopathy, Homeopathy and Ayurveda are the various systems of medicines prevalent in the world.

 

4. How are the three systems of medicine different from one another?

Answer –  Allopathy is the mainstream system of health care and it treats the physical systems by using the tried out medicines. It relies heavily on chemicals. Homeopathy is based on the doctrine of ‘like cures like’. In it a substance that causes the symptoms of disease in healthy people is used to cure similar symptoms in sick people. Ayurveda is the ancient Indian system of natural and holistic medicine. It focuses on the prevention of the disease and to eliminate its root cause.

 

5. What are the basic principles of Ayurveda?

Answer –  Ayurveda works on the principle of providing the knowledge of how to prevent the disease and how to eliminate its root cause if it does occur. It uses various herbs and natural elements to prepare the medicines. Ayurveda works on the principle to keep the five cosmic elements balanced for a healthy and happy life.

 

6. What effects do the five basic elements in the universe have on us?

Answer –  The five basic elements in the universe has great effects on our individual system. Each person will be influenced by certain elements more than others. The mix of these basic elements are responsible for our unique physical, mental and emotional characteristics.

 

7. What are the three energies (doshas)? List them.

Answer –  The three doshas are known as Vata (space and air), Pitta (fire and water) and Kapha (water and earth).

 

8. How are people with vata/pitta/kapha different from one another in the functions of their body?

Answer –  Vata is responsible for all the communication and movement in a person. If kept in balance, it leads to creativity and vitality. It produces fear and anxiety if out of balance. Pitta governs all energy and transformation. If kept in balance, it leads to contentment and intelligence; and can cause ulcers and anger if out of balance. Kapha controls growth in the body. It is expressed as love and forgiveness. If out of balance it can lead to insecurity and envy.

 

9. Name a well-known person in your town who runs ‘a health care centre’. Which system of medicine does he/she practice?

Answer –  Dr. Ritesh Valmik is a well-known paediatric in my town Durg. He runs a helath care centre to treat children. He practices the Allopathy system of medicine.

• Change the instructions into present passive by filling in the blanks.

First the monitor keyboard and printer are linked up. Then the main cable is plugged in. The monitor is switched on at the back. When the light appears on the screen, Day Disk is placed in Drive A. The disk is pushed in until the button is clicked out. About 30 seconds are taken by computer to load the programme. The drive button is pressed and the disk shoots out. The Day Disk is replaced with the Documents Disk. Finally, the function key 7 is pressed. The word processor is then ready to use.
